NETWORKING 2 Computer in XP Help needed
I just bought a new rig and I have installed windows xp pro on it. I have also windows xp pro on the older one. I have a cable connection: here is my set up...I have a Lynksys Wireless-B Broadband Router Model BEFW11S4 wich has two antennas on it for wireless capability and also has 4 ports you can plug into in the back if you don't want to use wireless. Now the new computer is hooked to the back of the router in the port 1 and the old computer is located in the other room using a Wireless - B PCI Adapter Model WMP11.
I can use my cable connection on both computers just fine ie: surf, do downloads..etc
I would like to network the two computers toghter so i can share files and printers between the two, I have tried runing the win xp "Home or small office network wizard" and selecting the residential gateway option wich is the router, but I cannot get the two computers to communicate or access each other.... Neither i can make any of my files or drives shared. I'm at a lost, i have contacted Lynksys and they don't have tech support in regards to file sharing they directed me to a bunch of docs wich basically is what i had done anyways....I have searched the net true forums and web pages but can't figure out what is wrong.
If anyone with networking experience could help me troubleshoot this I would be immensily gratefull I really don't want to start burning and copying cd's just to get all the stuff from my 120 gig over to my new computer...LOL
Both computers are set to the same workgroup name the default windows assigned MSHOME. I tryed resetting the router by pressing the reset button and turning it off and then on and so on..but that didn't work either...
COMPUTER ONE Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
COMPUTER 2 Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : insightbb.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
They are both able to connect to the internet as stated above but can't see each other..GRRR
MY AIM addy is MasGrafxRacing24 if any tecky wants to help..hehe
Oh yeah i also made sure my xp firewall was off on each computer and even tryed turning zone pro off on both but nothing....
Thanks in advance for any help possible...

Some pretty basic "rules" (I always do it manually... good practice):
1. Make sure the PCs are in the same "workgroup" (assign a workgroup name with no spaces/odd characters)
2. Make sure each PC has a unique name (again, no spaces in the PC's name)
3. Make sure Microsoft "Client for Networks" is the default login.
4. Make sure that you create identical user accounts on each PC (exact same username/password).
5. Make sure you "share" the hard drives on each PC and grant permission to each user, as you desire. You can share the C: drive on PC "mine" by sharing "\\mine\c$" and grant permissions as you see fit (read, write, delete, etc.).
6. If you are going to use one of your PCs as a "print server" (printer connected to that PC) make sure you also share the printer (will need to assign a printer name (no spaces in name).
FYI, XP Pro offers more granular security, so you can assign/change permissions at the folder, or even file level.
Post back with any other Qs. G-Luck!

can you go to the 'command prompt" and "ping" each computer from the other computer??
for instance go to the one machine and do "ping 192.168.1.101" see what it does...and try it from the other machine also.
recheck the firewalls on both cuz that is the #1 thing...if u ran a wizard it turned the firewall on again.
File and printer sharing is on by default on xp pro I think....have you actually shared anything?? right click on "my documents" or something and look for "sharing" and make sure you have something shared on both machines....then give it a few minutes and see if you see the shared stuff in the other machines "my network places"

Are you using any kind of software firewall or Anti Virus that includes a firewall utility on either computer? If so try disabling it and reboot both PCs.
I had a similar problem setting up a wireless network where all the PCs had PC-Cillin. PC-Cillin's built in firewall blocked File and Printer sharing by default. Once disabled all the computers on the network could talk to each other just fine.

Well they are all on XP..so they all have the same "workgroup" name already...and they all should have file and printer sharing on by default.
So basically the main thing is to MAKE SURE you have the firewall OFF on all the comps. Go to each network connection and right click/properties/advanced..and make sure the firewall in UNCHECKED.
Then basically it should be a matter of just right clicking on some files or folders and "sharing" them...for instance right click on "my documents" and look for the "sharing" info etc.
Then on the other comps go to "my network places" and see if the shared stuff shows up.
The number one problem is having the firewall on...so make sure it is off...if you run any of the netowrking wizards they will turn it back on.

I've got my desktop and laptop networked using crossover cable. To set them up I just ran the setup home network wizard on both, then set the desktop's IP address to 192.168.0.1 and the laptop's to 192.168.0.3 (.2 was my old compaq desktop) I then restarted both and ZA popped up asking if I wanted to share resources with the network 192.168.0.0 and I said yes and I could then access shared folders on the seperate computers.

If you don't share the hard drives, you will not be able to map to them. See the links I sent you via PM earlier today.
One other thing -- as JP mentioned -- don't run any firewall programs until you get everything talking to one another... you may just be shooting yourself in the foot, otherwise.
