Video Editing and adding sound

Ok I am a total noooooob when it comes to video editing especially since I have never done it b4. I have to do a project in French and it needs to be recorded. I need to be able to edit out scenes etc. What exactly do I need and is there any free programs I can use or can I just use Windows Movie Maker? Also I will be needing to add in sounds soo... anyways any help would be greatly appreciated (BTW this project is for me and izaic3) Well TY in advance. BTW I have XP Pro if that helps and I will be using a brand new Video Camera. What do I need to use to transfer it on my comp?

Mita

VirtualDub is free and allows for linear editing. You can cut film segments, mix in sound, etc. Read the documentation closely.

You can perform most the same operations with Windows Movie Maker in a more streamlined interface. It may be your best bet considering you probably do not have time to learn about nonlinear editing.

Here is a great WMM tutorial....

Good Luck,

What type of source are you using?

If it is analog like VHS, then you need a video capture card, like a cheap WinTV tuner card. You can then use WMM to grab the video from the incoming source.

If it is digital, then you would need a IEEE 1394 Firewire card. Again, you can use WMM to grab the video (actually just copying data).

I know you are pushed for time, but luckily either type of card can be found at about any retail computer store like OfficeMax, Staples, or Circuit City for under $50 assuming you don't already have a capture device.
