Knowing Intel, they designed the P4 so I wouldn't run in SMP mode, so they force people to adopt the Xeon line of processors.

Dead on. They rely on co's needing SMP ='s buying $ Xeon. They are fretting a 64bit 32bit in one cpu at a lower price for that reason with the Itanium segment. But are now forced to keep pace with amd's 64 cpu's. Sooo. Its either gonna come down to making a real 32bit compat 64bit chip at a lower priceing hence hindering the Xeon and Itanium sales. Or NOT haveing one to compete and having problems filling the new 64bit desktop market with Intel cpu's. Not a easy choice intel is faced with. Cutting losses one way or another. But will still make $ either way too.
