Downloading from digital camcorder

hey all, just wondering if anyone can help me out here.
i recently purchased a Canon Optura 20 digital miniDV camcorder and all i can do it transfer pictures from the card. im trying to get what i shot for my movie onto the computer but the minute i change the camera settings from card to tape, it losses connection with the computer. I have an s video hookup on my video card and every program i try to capture video from it with cant connect to it... plz help

what vid card are you useing to capture the video with ?

the way I do minw it to play the tape into a vcr first then play the vcr tape through my tv tunner and record it to the hard drive that way.

From what I understand, the easiest way is to use a firewire conenction between DV camera and the computer. This will take the digital signl and not go through the analog conversions that a capture card will require.

I will be doing this in a couple weeks (waiting on new laptop and video editing software to arrive).

Firewire from camcorder to computer. Comes out in real-time audio and video. You'll need a couple of GBs for every hour of video.
