x86 is an architechure that the cpu uses....intel amd c3 all use the x86 platform....it is what windows uses obviously

linux is much more stable than windows and is generally immune to things like adware/viruses....windows is compatible with all of the programs though...however there are alternitaves but they are less framiliar to us

i wouldn't recomend completly switching to linux at first....there are basically 3 options....a live bootable cd that dosent install just to try it out....dual booting with windows where you pick which os to go into....or installing it on a older spare machine

x86 platform is the family of processors you find in PCs. Athlons and Pentium family processors are x86.

The advantage of Linux is it's very stable and very secure. The disadvantage is it's a little harder to learn to administrate. Linux can be used to run servers or workstations.

Another advantage of Linux is that it's free to download if you have a fast internet connection (www.linuxiso.org) or very inexpensive to purchase if you do not (www.cheapbytes.org, www.easylinuxcds.com, www.osdisc.com, to name a few).

When you obtain Linux, you are getting more than just the operating system (unlike Windows), you get a ton of applications as well. http://www.linuxgazette.com/node/view/386

Yes, you can easily dual boot Linux and Windows. As a matter of fact, that's a good way to start out on Linux. Keep Windows to get your work done and reboot to Linux when you want to spend time learning a new operating system.
