My PSU is making my ears bleed!

My PSU is just too noisy! I think that I would actually like my PC better if it didn't give me a headache. So, I was thinking that instread of buying a new PSU, maybe I could just replace the fans. Anyone tried this? Any suggestions?

Yep, it is an easy job. Most power supplies use a standard 80mm case fan. Unplug the p/s for a couple hours so it can discharge the capacitors. Then open the case and you can see how the fan is connected. Some have a plug-in connecter and some have to be soldered. Either way it is a simple job. If you don't have a spare fan look at www.nexfan.com to buy one. Select an 80x80mm fan. Get one with ball bearings and a noise level of under 30dba.

Elroys got it summed up, make sure you let those capacitors discharge. One good way is to unplug the PSU from the wall and try to turn on the computer.

Yes let the capacitor's discharge! It sucks waking up on the floor wondering what the hell happened, only to find your psu across the room against the wall. This happened to a friend of mine... yeah a friend - lol

Really? Must try that... hehe
My PSU is terribly loud, but I'm used to it by now, and if I have any music on, it drowns it out.

weird, most psu fan wont have loud noises, what kind of psu you using? anyway I replaced my psu fan with a CoolerMaster Quad LED fan with a clear cover mod, well..quite silent because of the RIFLE bearing.

Well I always suggest CoolerMaster's fan to quite a lot of people

The best way to check to see if your capacitors are depleted is by taking a screwdriver and jamming into the PSU a few times. If you don't end up going through a window and landing in your yard it's all good..................

LOL, jk......Please don't do that, I might feel responsible......

Really though, leave it unplugged for as long as possible (overnight maybe) before you start jacking around in there.

Old topic? I would like to replace a 120mm fan in my PSU. The fan in there now is rated at 0.38A and the replacement is at 0.20A. Can the lower amp rating hurt anything? And wouldn't wearing rubber gloves help reduce the danger of electrocution?
