Laptop Cooling Question

I was wondering if anyone here has ever opened up their laptop and did some light modification to their stock cooling system. I have a HP that has a heatpipe running from the processor to the rear fan assembly. I was thinking of opening up my machine and cleaning off the stock thermal paste and putting in some Arctic Silver 5.

Also, my girlfriends computer, a Dell, also has a heatpipe, plus I think one of her fans is dead. I was thinking of doing the same, plus getting a new fan in there.

Anyone do this? Anyone know people who have? Does this fall under the catagory of "fools only" or "insane: do not attempt"?

As long as you're just asking, I'll simply say that I wouldn't touch it.

Is your girlfriend's system under warranty? If so, why even consider messing around with it?

I added some artic silver to my hp ze1210 laptop and the fan is used less. But i had other reasons to open the case. (had to replace the power connector) I havent noticed any real results other than the fan being used less.
