Mornin everyone!
Got a problem with a dialup modem. I`ve instaled the modem ok and the freeserve disc and it all works ok but when i shut the computer down and then reboot the modem doesn`t work and i have to uninstall the modem, reinstall it then reactivate the freeserve account to make it work again. Obviously i don`t want to do all that every time. So whats wrong?
I`ve tried three different modems and the same happens everytime so I assume it can`t be a problem with the modem.
The machine seems to be lossing the settings every time I shut down.
Please help, its doing my head in.

what operating system are you using?? Try just installing the modem then shutting down the computer to make sure it stays installed. Make sure there are no device conflicts and maybe try another pci slot. Since you have tried other modems I'd say its more than likely the freeserve software which I'd assume freeserve I assume is your internet provider?? I use to run into issues with AOL and one of my modems AOL wouldn't detect the modem properly and would create havoc with my computer. If there are setting for an expert set-up you might make sure that the freeserve software is recognizing your modem properly.

One of the problems can be that your the Battery for BIOS does not work. To see if your Battery is good you have to check the Clock of your computer. You can do that by adjusting the time to a certain time or the right time and date. And then turn your computer off and if you come back later and the Time is at 12:00 AM and the date says 1989 or something like that then the battery of CMOS is bad.

If it is bad this might be the problem because when you install your modem, the program that installs it for you does all neccesary configuration and it is saved in BIOS settings.

Since your battery is not good. Everytime you will have the default settings on the computer and the configuration made by the program will be lost. and if that is you will lose the configuration. you just have to buy a new battery.

If that's not the problem then you might have to unlock BIOS if it is locked and the settings cannot be changed if it is locked.

If you find that BIOS is locked then you will need a Program called BIOS Killer you can go Yahoo and search a place to download. If you want i can email it to you. Just let me know

Hope this helps you.

Sorry i didn;t read the last things you said , but you just said the machine is losing settings every time you shut it down.

Then as I said the problem is that your battery is bad. Check on your date as i just told you. shut the comp down come back later and see if the time is at 12:00AM and a bad year like 1989 or something like that. If that happens you just have to buy a new battery. But let me warn you that if you buy the battery and it stills loses the settings then i do not what could you do. Because i did this with some comps at least 10 computers and in 2 computers didn't work.

But wish you luck.
