Can a bios be updated with an external floppy drive?

I'm thinking of getting an external floppy drive so I can update all my computers bios.
I only have one internal and it's just a pain to take it out or try to connect it with the computers right next to each other.

Will this work with an external or if not does anyone have any suggestions?

For DOS upgrades, as long as you can boot with the exturnal it will work. Newer boards upgrade from windows.

Are your machines FAT32 or NTFS? If they are FAT32 then you can just boot to a command prompt (dos) and update your bios from there. You don't have to boot via floppy.

With NTFS I'm not sure.

If its NTFS then burn a cd with a win98 setup disks autoexec and all that other stuff you need(i think you also need a system.sys or something also). Add the bios update stuff in it. Set the bios to boot to cd, boot, select the start to cmd with cdrom support. Then do the updating. I've done it, but i just used a win98 bootcd and another cd with the bios files. Either works.

As long as your different PCs can boot to an external floppy, you can update BIOS via that external floppy. If the external floppy drive requires any OS support (from the hard drive-installed OS) , then you are sunk.
