Talk Is Cable Modem & Router Question

I have a Linksys cable modem model BFECMU10 ver.2 .
I also have a Linksys router model BEFSR41 ver.3 .
I would like to run my main computer from the USB port,
and up to 4 from the Ethernet (cat5) port via the 4port router.
Will this work??

Do you want to run one computer off of the usb on the modem and the rest off of your router?

Yes. The modem has a USB port and a cat5 port. Linksys calls this port ethernet or lan.

why not just run them all off the router? (or dont you have enough lan jacks on the router?)

its my understanding that the "hardwired" ethernet would be talking to the modem at 100mbps. but, your only going to surf the net at 11mbps. (unless of course your on something other than the standard isp account. which, for me, would cost double what im paying now. and then, instead of 11mbps id be at 54mbps.) if i did that id have to buy a new router and/or modem that can run at 54mbps.

there are only two reasons i can see even using the "hardwired" ethernet line. 1) to xfer large amounts of data across YOUR network only. and 2) so you can still talk to your wireless router while configuring it.

1 not enough lan jacks
2 the firewall in the proposet main computer will conflict with the
router firewall.
3 I have all the stuff. I don't want to buy more. I want to put the
stuff I have to use.

My Motorola directions say you can use the USB and CAT5 connection at the same time, But you will need 2 internet accounts and you will have no firewall on the USB computer.

You have a firewall.
But you will still need another account.

Thanks for answering. One of my main concerns was damage to the equipment.

Another account must be at least $40 per MO.
A good 4 port switch is less than that.
I have a router and use Zone Alarm software firewall with no problems
