Talk Neverwinter Nights

I have been searching for a new game and picked up Neverwinter Nights Gold last night for 29 dollars. It includes the expansion pack.

I am actually having a bit of trouble figuring this game out. I have never played D&D so alot of things are strange to me. I love playing mages in any game and did so here.

I chose an Elf Wizard as my first character. Casting has been a bit of a challenge for me. If I understand it correctly, I have to prepare a spell before I can use it. I can only prepare as many spells as i have slots for. I must then rest after selecting the spells. Then once I use them they cant be used again until next I prepare them once again. In many areas I have been unable to rest because of enemies were near. How can I prepare spells if I cant rest. At early levels I only have a few slots so I run out of prepared spells quickly. Then I have to switch to my dagger or crossbow.

What are books used for in this game? Will I need them for quests later on or can I sell them? Actually I already did cause i filled up quickly.

Can I store items I find in treasure chests or will I lose them?

I played Morrowind and am trying to relate the two.

I only played for a short time last night. Hopefully tonight will be a bit clearer for me.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Starting off with a mage is hard for that game. You will really need to visit the Trade of Blades and pick up a henchman. Daelen Redtiger, the half-orc barbarian would be the best in your situation.

You have a good grasp on how the spell system works. I think you understand it already.

You CAN put items in chests and the game may or may not remember them when you start it up again. I'll vote for not though. Try it with something cheap like sling stones or something. I've never tried.

Most books are solely for resale. Some of them are worth quite a bit too. You'll know if it's a quest item because you won't be able to sell it.

The feat system can be confusing if you don't know know DnD, or are new to the game. Overall it's pretty simple. For a mage, I would take toughness right off for the xtra three hit points. I've actually never played a mage in NWN so I don't know what, if any, of the magic feats are available. Personally, I'd take feats like dodge and mobility right away. Dodge you have to activate so it's a pain, but mobility is automatic and is very useful as it gives you +4 to armor class when someone gets an attack of oppurtunity on you. Very handy for a mage with a poor armor class to begin with.

If you have any specific questions, I'm sure I can be of more help. Agent_Embryo also plays a lot and I'm sure he'd be willing to lend a hand if he sees the thread.

Well I used to play it alot, but I've never really played a mage eighter, I think I've tried a few times but never really got the hang of it. I have mostly been playing fighter characters...hm...maybe I should start playing again soon. Just have to pick up the first expansionpack so I can play on Vagabond's PW server.

Most books are just for to fill out the story. there are a few that you need to progress, but most you don't.

Resting is supposed to represent stopping for the day and sleeping...marking the end of the day. You have a certain amount of spells per day (# of slots) and once you cast those spells, you have to rest before you can cast again. For Mages, it represents studying and prepareing your spell components. For clerics it represents Praying to their diety for the power to cast spells. Some areas you are not allowed to rest, in which case you will have to use your wits. Other areas you can just move away from enemies just enough to get a rest in and come back to kick butt.

Mages have it hard in the begining since they have very little spells. But they end up being very powerful once they have a few more spells at their disposal. In the beginning, pick up Color Spray. It's a low level mage special!

The first time I played it I used the mage AND beat the game. Took about 3 weeks though. Anyhow thing to do is pickup a fighter side kick so he can bail ya out when in trouble. Use him for the meat target on the front line while you smack the enemy from behind him.

PS. you can use ESCAPE key to pause game, select next move or spell/attack then unpause. Helps in hard parts of game.

Yeah I played as a Sorcerer for a bit before restarting the game as a Fighter (Chaotic Neutral I beleive). The game is much easier with a non-spellcaster, I advise people to start with a hands-on combat character first, and either beat it that way and then replay it with a wizard/sorcerer or set up two saved games, one for each character and advance at an even rate.

A multi-class battlemage (fighter, sorcerer) is a cool mixture, start off with the fighter and switch to sorcerer later on.
