RJ-45 Wall Jack?

Right now I have exposed RJ-45 cable running through my loft, and would like to put it in the wall, and preferrably install a jack that I can then plug my switch into.

How easy is this? Do they make RJ-45 wall jacks?

I'm no longer familiar with this stuff.. So if anyone could fill me in on the best route to go - that would be great.

Thanks.

Are you using a router? If so, have you considered wireless? I just got a Linksys WRT54G and WPC54G today and it's great. I'm going to get a couple of wireless PCI cards as well.

RJ-45 jacks are very simple to wire and leave a clean look. In our new house there is a jack in every room all lines run down to a patch panel where the router and cable modem are. Most jacks come with a cheap punchdown type tool(push wires into the blades) but I use a good 110 punchdown tool. Everything is usually color coded for you.

I buy the stuff at Home Depot here. A metal box to go in the wall
the jacks snap into a universal face plate. The wire connections just push on.

Keep the untwist to 1/2 inch or less make no bends with a radius less then 3" Keep it at least 6 inches away from ac lines, no staples. You don't have to use a box, an old cable guy trick is cut a hole big enough for the socket to clear then fasten the faceplate to the dry wall with a sheet metal screw.

Here is my wall jack setup.

I used a plastic box with an open back. I like having everything coming out of one hole in the wall.

They also make metal boxes that mount in the sheet rock very easly for just a couple of bucks. Then the face plate can hold up to 6 outlets, phone, RCA, coax, cat5, and others.
