stupid disc read error!

Here is the situation, my ps2 is about 3 years old, and I have just recently been getting the disc read errors with a new game I bought (champions of Norrath). I can’t read the disc so I stuck in another game. It read that game but I noticed it took a lot longer for the game to be read then unusual. I tried cleaning the disc with a disc cleaner, but unfortunately I get a disc read error with the cleaner disc (how convenient). So I put in an audio disc and low and behold, disc read error, but I then put in another ps2 game (not champions of norrath), and it worked fine. I don’t think it is my champions of norrath disc because it is bran new, and I checked it out for scratches. Plus of all the other problems. I have also tired blowing air into the ps2 to clean it that way. No luck so far. I don’t want to open it up unless I have to, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated besides opening it up. If I have to then I will take it apart, but with my luck I will end up doing more harm then good. The sooner I can fix this the happier my girl friend will be. She is getting very agitated that we have been unable to play champions of norrath for about a week now. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I don't want to buy another ps2 unless I have too, thanks!

Ok I had the same problem with a friends. We went and got one of those cd's that have the little bristles on them and stuck it in there and it cleande the lense and it worked fine after that. But for what I usually do is pull it apart, take cd-rom drive cover off (from the inside) and clean the lense with windex and a q-tip. GL

thanks MitaDC for the advice. The cd lense cleaner that I had, has the little brushes, but when I tried to use it I got the disc read error witht that. I have found a cool link that goes through step by step on how to open up the ps2, so maybe this weekend I will try that. I have nothing to lose, and me and my gf really want to finish champions. I will however try to clean champions disc in hopes that maybe the boot up file is scrathced on the cd, it is a long shot, but that way if that doesn't work, i can be 99% sure that it is my ps2 (how frustrating...) thanks for the wonderful advice and hopefully i can fix it this weekend, and if need be I am prepared to take it apart (which will probably be the case). If anyone needs directions in taking apart the ps2 this is a cool link!

Please be aware that there is a disclamier, and if you do take apart the ps2 the author of the above link is NOT held responsaialbe (he does say that in his link).

if you do a search on the web for "disc read error" you'll find tons of articles on how to fix it. It's a very common problem in the early PS2s.
