Systems Windows 2000 won't display my external USB Hard Drive

I just bought a Seagate 20GB laptop harddrive and an external case.

I connect the cables and my computer detects a USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE

but no hard drive letter is ever assigned ... anyone know how to fix this problem?

I had an external hard drive that wasn't a laptop hard drive before and it worked fine.

What gives?

Hmm, did you install the drivers correctly? If not get the updated drivers from the manufactor.
If that is ok, then have you formated the drive and assigned it a drive letter?

Since it is a HDD, i believe they would be required then format the drive how you want it.

It's strange though, because my old 4GB Quantam HDD worked fine without the use of any drivers etc. I just put it inside the case and connected the USB cables and it showed up.

You could have just used the disk managment utillity built into windows to perform the same function

Depends on the manufacturer. Some do not require additional drivers while others do.
