Windows Messenger 4.7

I have this irritating issue with Windows Messenger 4.7 and I have had it since I started using Windows Messenger. I went back to it, since I have always liked it better than MSN Messenger (6.1 latest version) since its more simple, and thats what I need, a simple chat program. MSN Messenger comes with other nice features, but I really dont need them, so I use Windows Messenger, which suites me well except this: Everytime I try to send or recieve a file I always end up with an error telling me the file could not be sent/recieved. I searched the Knowledge Base for Windows Messenger and I couldnt find anything to fix this issue. Its getting irritated, and its the only thing that makes me go back to MSN Messenger. Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I dont want to start using MSN Messenger again. I know many will tell me that Windows Messenger is crap and that I should use MSN Messenger, and that I am weird to prefer Windows Messenger over MSN. But I do, and I want to find a fix to this issue.

You don't by chance have a firewall on do you...my sister was accually running NPF and my routers firewall at the same time which was making msn messenger do that but when she disabled it it was fine with 1 firewall

if nto you might try an older version of msn messenger from www.oldversion.com

I do have a firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro.
How do I configure it to fix my problem?
Also I think you cant use older versions of MSN Messenger, it will just ask you at its startup to update to the latest version, if you say no you wont be able to use the Messenger.

first thing I would do is dis able it for a minute and see if that fixes it...if it does not then it is not the firewall

I think there may be a point a ways back that msn did not have the code in there to force you to update it...but i don't remember what that is

Just tried to send/recieve files when ZoneAlarm was disabled, and no it still didnt work. [Shrug] What could it be then? Also if I am able to use an older version of MSN Messenger, say 4.6 without it asking me to update it everytime then thats also a possibility. I just dont want to use the latest version of MSN Messenger, since I dont need everything it has.

if you use ZA, it should warn you everytime windows messenger wants to act as a server, and then you choose whether to allow it or not.

or you could go to the "programs" tab on ZA and allow it to act as a server and have access to the internet.

If you have a router then you need to forward the ports, and you would have to bring zone alarm down to at least the "medium" level for internet zone.

I would suggest elimating Windows Messenger from your machine and using gAIM or the free version of trillian. Both of which seem to work better for file transfers imo (it uses a single port which you can change/configure). Not to mention you can connect to multiple chat clients at once (msn/aim/yahoo/icq)

just came to mind...

No Dropp, this is my machine, the ones with Windows XP SP2 are just computers (Notebook/Desktop) for test purposes and from my college. Dont use them at home Well, I dont think its my router since happened before I got that router. What could it be?! Getting frustrated here

*Trillian or Gaim could be a nice idea*
