Fileserver: How much space

Hello people,

I'm costing a fileserver that will have 20 workstations connected to it. The workstations will be used for general office and accounting work. I've got most of it costed but i can't make my mind up about how much disk space to include. Would anyone like to offer their opinion on the subject?

Cheers Mike...

There's no such thing as too much harddrive space. I'd say estimate the amount needed and then add some on top. Better to be on the safe side.

I understand the point your making but i've got to cost this as cheaply as possible but still giving good performance so i'm really after a figure. This is just an assignment and we haven't been given any indication of the amount of space required other than what i mentioned before about the general office work

you're leaving out some important details, ie. what type of drives (ide or scsi) and if you are going to run raid of some type (usually raid5 on the data stores).

>we haven't been given any indication of the amount of space required other than what i mentioned before about the general office work

if i were you, it is mandatory that you find out what their current storage sizes are (whether they're storing it on a local drive, or an old server, etc). w/o this info, you aren't going to be able to do a good job completing this assignment - underestimating their disk requirements can hurt you, just as badly as overestimating...
