Cantenna WI-FI Booster

I read a article that this can be used to illegally to connect to a wireless network. The article suggest to enable "WEP" to prevent unknown wireless cards from connecting.

Yeah if you don't want people on your network you should hard wire. I have a friend that has made a few of these cantennas and he can get wireless networks from 2+ miles away. These things don't make it possible to connect to wireless, they make it possible to connect to wireless from a distance. Anyone with a laptop and a wireless card can hop on a open network.

Well, perhaps a lot of things that are legal can be used illegally.
I can see the advantages, but don't have a use for one
Although when were considering setting up a wireless network to access a cable signal it would have been nice to know about it.
Remember Scott's Starbucks article?
[quote]is that his company's inexpensive antennas could be used to create ubiquitous Wi-Fi coverage by linking and extending the range of existing and soon-to-be-deployed public and freenet access points.

Seems like the guy is pretty pragmatic. He figures they will be regulated but at this point ...

i heard that website is horrible to do business with. heard several stories of them taking forever to ship the product or running off with your money. Plus 50 bucks to build something so simple with directions online and costing about $5, i think not.

Those articles that talk about cracking WEP glorify how to do it, they make it sound like all they need to do is load a program up and its automatically done. What they dont tell you is that this is most for unix/linux. there really isnt any kind of winders programs that you just load up and it starts cracking packets.

plus cracking a wireless homework will take forever if there is only two computers using the wireless network.

the secuirty problem is there. but with simple steps enabled you can keep your wireless network clean
