Alternative to mini-DV tape decks?

I own a Canon XL1 and have been using my camera's firewire output to transfer video to PC.
I have been told that I need to invest in a mini-DV deck to reduce wear and tear on my camera's play head.
Most decks cost 1200 or more.
Is there an inexpensive alternative to a deck for transfering video that does not sacrifice quality?

I have looked into DV disk recorders that would allow me record and play digital video files captured from a digital camcorder, but haven't found something within my price range (4-600) and am not sure if they would work with my XL1.
Any suggestions would be appreciated by this grad student on a budget. : )

maybe buy a cheap camera from Bestbuy and put an extended warrenty and just use it for unimportant taping, in situations where you dont want to risk your expensive camera, and to move video to your PC.
