Kids Hello Can I Pick Your Brains ?

First off I'd like to say hello.
I have been lurking in the shadows for a while and finally thought I'd register so I could start asking stupid questions and let you guys guide me in the right direction.

This is what I've got :-

XP 2400+
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2
1 GB of DDR400 dual channel mem (Twinmoss 2 x 512)
20 GB & 40 GB HDD
CD-R/RW
DVD ROM
GeForce 5600 256 MB

This is what I want :-

A reasonably fast pooter that can handle games, a bit of CAD and some photo editing.

I think what I have is basically quite good , but I would like to know how to tweak it for a bit more performance. Please bear in mind I have no expirience in OCing so any help will be greatly appreciated

Looks fine to me. If u rn't looking for high quality graphics that the 9800 can pump out then it looks fine. Might need a bigger Hard Drive but other than that it looks like a fine comp to me

BTW: WELCOME TO TECHIMO!

Yeah that looks plenty good for what you need it for. May wanna invest in another hard drive, though.

Welcome.

wot he said.....and agree that a bigger hard drive is a must.........games, music, etc take up lots of space.......

if that mobo supports sata, then sata hdds are a bit quicker than ide drives and the smaller sata cables can help airflow in yer box and thus aid cooling of all those delicate lil bits and bobs

welcome to techimo

the cpu is fine but a 2500+ might give u an advantage because it has 512 cache and 333 fsb

if your motherboard dosent support it there is no point in using a controler card as the pci bus is not faster than the ide bus

I think I heard something about 2500's being locked by AMD.........not exactly sure what this means but would I really notice a difference over what I have now.

MitaDC.............Yeah my mobo does support SATA, so if it is possible, I think I'll take the advice of you fine folk

Well, as far as overclocking goes, if you have decent cooling, you might be able to get the 2400+ to a 166MHz FSB, but it would probably take some good stuff to get it to a 400MHz FSB. Unless you can play with the multiplier, then that's what I'd do.

Other than that, you already have a more than capable chip, memory, mobo, and a decent video card. You might have to upgrade the video in another 2 years, or sooner, depending on how often you look at new games, and how fast they come along as far as system requirements go. I definately agree that a larger hard drive would be on my list of items to look for in the future. I'd keep an eye on in store deals or rebates at your local chain-stores for a good deal, and pick one up when a great deal comes along.

As for SATA being faster right now, as long as the HDD is still on the PCI bus, it's not going to get much faster as far as total speeds attainable, at least not at the densities and RPM's things can take at this moment. PCI-X is on the way, though, and I don't know enough about that, or how far off it is, to recommend paying even a dollar more for SATA than PATA. If you can find one cheaper than a similiar PATA, though, and your motherboard has everything you need to support it, and it'll work with your PSU (I think most of the ones out now have a standard molex connector as well as the 3.3V flat connector). Other than that, don't expect much more out of it.
