Computer won't boot

I have a compaq presario 7000 running win xp.

Everything was fine until I took out the motherboard and then put it back in. I did that some times before and all was fine. Until the last time

What happens is that the computer simply won't boot, the fans and all are running. The LED on the HD is running for a few seconds bu then turns off.

Also, the LED outside the comp is orange. Normally it should be green. Before the LED turned orange only when the comp was put into sleep mode.

Can anyone help me?? Dunno what to do

Welcome to Techimo

Sounds like you are shorting something out. Check around and under the motherboard to see if you have a loose screw or other metal device poking the motherboard.

Normally the powersupply will shutdown when something gets shorted just like you described.

Also check all the cards making sure they are firmly seated as well as the cables. A loose video card or pci card will also cause this.

Thank you for the quick response jman01pa.

I checked and no shortings occured. I turned on the computer with the motherboard out of the case just to make sure.

I'm trying now with just a barebone sets - motherboard, cpu and ram. No gfx card, no hd, no pci attached.

I also tried a different power supply and same problem.

I'm afraid that perhaps my motherboard might have somehow burned down or something, is there any way to check if the motherboard is working?

The power switch seems to turn on the comp so I would think that the motherboard is okay, however, I'm afraid that something else could get damaged somehow.

Help is appriciated

Have you tried pulling out the onboard CMOS battery off the motherboard (make sure you computer is not plugged into power) and then leave it for about 15 mins. This will reset the bios to default but might clear up the problems.. also make sure you don't have a screw or piece of metal you might of bent taking out the motherboard which is touching one the circuits.... it will short out the motherboard.
