[POLL] Fee for P2P???

Would you support a small fee (say 5 bucks a month) added to your internet bill to allow for free and unfettered access to mp3s?

that would be cool if this happens but i don't think its feesable...most people on broadband would download 100s or 1000s of songs

The service I'm thinking about is one that would offer unlimited trading and access to high quality files.

Would that type of service change your position?

I would opt to purchase music from a country (ie Russia) where copyright legislation does not require payment of dues to the RIAA when buying digital music, thus allowing downloads for pennies per song.

Well I may think about paying if the music was available in say FLAC compression. Although im still on dialup, IMO it would be worth it.

Let me explain my situation: I am doing research on processors and hardware. I also do school and have a job. what does this equal? No time for music. However, my dad subscribes to Rhapsody music service. Nice service, but high on price.
The thing I am trying to say is that the price in the limiting factor right now.. most music services charge an arm and a leg for their services. Example : Rhapsody charges per download (if after the 14 days trial period) and then goes righ back and charges you AGAIN to make a burn CD (about 21 bucks but you can reburn a 2nd for free.. 3rd for free and so on and so forth).

The big thing here is: COST

I'm not paying any monthly fees to access music; not to listen to it, not to download it, nor to burn it. I won't pay any monthly.

I'm a grandfather. Most of what I want to listen to is either readily available at iTunes or is out of print. iTunes is simple, consistent, and quick enough not to make messing around with P2P worth my time, except to look for the out of print.

Wal-Mart has just started a service which seems to be a good second. It's only for Windows machines, but it supports Windows 98SE+. Most of thee other services want W2K+.

Wal-Mart is very honest as to the limitations of their downloads. It's a bit more pain in the wherever to move the downloaded file around and the original file can only be burned to CD 10 times. iTunes can be burned to your heart's desire.

There are workarounds for either. But this is putting the music industry on the right track. Really, if either of these services have what you want, they compete very nicely with P2P. They're quick, you get what you expect, and you don't have the RIAA police ready to kick in your door!
