Systems win98 share woes

I have 2 win98 pc's named front and back. They are connected to each other using a crossover cable. TCP/IP is installed. I can ping both ways.
It was wireless, but the wireless card failed so I replaced it with a realtec 8139 ethernet card and used a cable.
In device manager the card shows up fine, there is no listing for the wireless card.

On both machines the workgroup settings are the same. Both machines have the c drive shared. All other network configurations are the same.
From the back machine I can connect to the share on the front machine.
From the front machine all I get is an error:
Error 3787: You are not logged onto the network.
If I use find computer, it finds it.
From Front if I run nbtstat -a it finds the back machine and lists it as unique and registered.
A google search of the error was no help. Technet had a article about this problem for Win95. Tried the fix it listed, no joy.

I have tried everything I can think of to correct this.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Are you logging on to the front machine with the same user name as the back machine?

I am not logging on at all to either machine. They both just boot into the desktop without asking for a logon ID.
I set up a user in the user applet in control panel, but it did not help. Back is using "Windows Family Logon" as its primary client and it works, I have installed all three types of client for MS networks on front and none make a difference.

FYI, I did not set up this network. I did not get involved until the wireless card failed and I replaced it so there must be something I am missing.

Back is using "Windows Family Logon" as its primary client and it works

Have you tried setting them both with "client for microsoft networks" as the primary logon?

That is my understanding of what w98 usually needs to share stuff thru network neighborhood etc.

It should be giving you the prompt to logon everytime.

I have tried all 3 MS clients on both machines. At no time am I asked to logon to either machine. On other win98 machines I have used I have been able to "net use" to another machine using its netbios name or IP. But neither works.

with client for msnetworks as "primary logon"..its still not asking you to sign in?

I wonder if you deleted all the *.pwl files would it make you sign in and maybe make it work.

IT WORKS NOW!! Yipee!
The problem (I think), was that even though I removed the wireless card from device manager, it was still trying to use it. I reinstalled windows and it started to work, using just the windows family logon client.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
