Metal Halide Battery Question

Actually it's more of a charger question. I have a Canon A40 that takes AA rechargeable batteries metal halide. It came with a digital charger. No where on the charger does it say AA or AAA, but it seems like a pretty good one.
I was wondering if it would safely charge AAA as well. They fit in just fine.
Any thoughts ?

no, that would not be a good idea, the charger was designed for th AA batteries and the AAA will have a differant charge rate.
it would work, but batteries could over heat and explode.

If the voltage is ok, you're good to go. Battery chargers charge slow just to be safe. Your AAA batteries will not explode because the charger charges them too slow. Your batteries will only explode if you try to charge them with your car battery charger, which can put out 50A (rarely goes above 2A though). I've charged AA batteries on a car battery charger before and it worked fine. They charged within 20 minutes.
I was wearing a welding mask and safety goggles just to be safe though .
