WEIRD HD PROBLEM! HAPPENED TWICE!

this has now happened with 2 of my hard drives. more recently with my western digital 120 gig, but 3 or 4 months ago happened to my 30 gig seagate.

HARD DRIVE IS DETECTED IN THE BIOS FINE. GET IN WINDOWS ( XP and 2000) and says hard drive not formatted wud u like to format it now). on the 30 gig this only happend on the 2 nd partition, the other partition was fine in windows.

BUT IF I BOOT TO DOS OFF A WIN 2000 BOOT-ABLE CD. I CAN SEE ALL THE FILES THERE ON THE HARD DRIVE AS IF THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG.

I DID HEAR A FUNNY NOISE COMING FROM THE HARD DRIVE PRIOR TO IT GOING WRONG, BUT WHY WUD I BE ABLE TO SEE AND COPY THE FILES IN DOS OK, BUT NOT IN WINDOWS. AND WHY WUD THIS HAPPEN TO 2 HARD DRIVES! IN SUCH A SHORT SPACE OF TIME. ARE THEY OVER HEATING? CUS I DO LEAVE THEM ON A ALL THE TIME.

IM SORRY IF THIS IS A BIT LOG AND MY CAPS LOCK ANNOYS PEOPLE. I THANK YOU IF U CUD BE BOTHERED TO READ ALL THIS. ITS A REALLY ANNOYING PROBLEM.

THANKS

please do not make multiple posts

thanks

i suggest you back up your data on the drive that is erroring out

then go to the manufacture website and they have tools you can download and run to scan the drive for errors and problems

Overheating can cause this type of problem. What is your case ventillation like? I had a client last week with two HDs mounted one immediately above the other, and he was having frequent lockups and disk misreads. I separated the drives by one bay, and re-routed/bundled up all his cabling to improve case air flow, especially around the drives. He has been stable since last Thursday when I got done.

Other causes:
Viral infection (when you boot from boot disk, the virus is not active since the infected OS is not running the show).
Noise indicates possible drive defect.

sorry about the double post- wont happen again.

great advice already thanks.
my ventilation is weird as in i always have both sides off the case. and the hard drives do seem very hot. but even when cool it doesnt now come back to life. so it cud be a combination of the 2! viral and heat. im going to struggle with backing up data by only using dos. but thats all i can do.
