best hdd brand?

im in the market for a new ide hdd. preferrably with 8mb cache and over 100gigs. i currently have 3 maxtor drives, 2 of which are refurbished because i had to RMA the original drives, and i dont think the 3rd is too far behind. im looking at western digital caviar drives right now. anyone have good/bad comments on these or have any suggestions for a good dependable quality hdd? thanks in advance.

For IDE I have used 'em all... Fujitsu, IBM ('Deathstar'), Maxtor, Seagate, WD. For my money, I'd go WD or Seagate... but I'm sure everybody has had both positive and negative experiences with all the brands.

In some of the forums I visit, I have come across references to Maxtor drives being more sensitive to overclocked bus speed-related issues. Personally, I have not had this problem, but you may want to keep that in mind if you overclock using a mobo that doesn't lock the PCI bus speed to 33mHz.

From my IBM experience, I'd suggest staying away from drives which employ large advances in technology, or the very newest in technology. Wait a few months... let somebody else be the beta tester

The IBM 75GXPs, for example, were IBM's first release of a platter surface technology that had significanly increased areal density compared to the 60GXPs... and a relatively high percentage of these 75GXP drives failed prematurely (I owned 4 of them).

You may want to check out http://www.storagereview.com/ and see what folks there think.

My 80gb Seagate has worked flawlessly the last 18 months.

I've always chose Maxtor.... they are great drives, and their warranty and RMA processing it's pretty fast.

it pretty much is personal preference, but i've always loved seagate...they've performed flawlessly for me and are very quiet.

Yep I prefer Maxtor also. I don't care if it does go,,,, the are awesome with their trouble free RMA.
As far as I'm concerned they all go... and I've use WD, Fujitsu too.
I didn't think the WD was as good a Maxtor.

personally I would go WD, segate, maxtor, any others that still exist after that

WD/Seagate I have never had any trouble with about 20 of their drives in my systems dating back to around 93...I have only personally had 2 Maxtor drives and they performed excellent but this is the brand I hear about crashing the most...true they may have excellent support but that dosen't help get any data back

Although if you care about noise WD tends to be a bit louder than the rest
