Upgrading my Cpu

Ok guys, I have a proposition lol........I would like to upgrade my cpu(upgrade) and i have a budget of about 250$. right now im on a Compaq Presario with 566 Mhz or something like that and its really bogging me down. I want to upgrade this p.o.s so it will last me till college which is like 1 and half years. Right now this is what I have come up with...... Im upgrading the video card, hard drive, power supply, processor. I will prolly use sd ram (what i have right now) which can be used with this motherboard right? Will i need to upgrade nething else really? And if you know, i was just wondering if the Compaq presario case is ATX form. If anyone has some better prices (prefer newegg) or better products in lieu of what i have go right ahead and correct me. Keep in mind this is just a short term fix I dont feel the need to buy a new cpu right now.

Welcome to the forum!

what model presario is it?

What operating system? I ask because it will possibly have to be reinstalled with all those changes. And I bet they didnt give you an actual Windows disk...u problably got a restore disk etc. Maybe you can borrow a windows disk and just use your product key with it to reinstall windows from scratch....or maybe youll just have to reinstall windows "over the top"

Welcome to TechIMO!!

It's ATX.

But it's possible that the Compaq case is "proprietary" - meaning you may not be able to throw in another MB.

I don't know.

Hrmm Proprietary?! Thats crazy......well how would that work? Is it possible for me to mod the case if needed? And it's possible my folks will fork over some more cash if i need a new case but then thats like building a new cpu.....would i need to remove stuff like the modem etc and put it into the new case?

But ya i guess......my first concern is is i can put a new motherboard on this Compaq Presario 5868

I am thinking you will have no problems.

You can just look at the power supply and see if it is regular sized...if it is the regular kind with 4 screws holding it it, then the case is probably not proprietary. If it is the smaller power supply with 3 screws holding it in, then its a "microatx" power supply but they are also available up to like 230watts etc.

One area that might be of concern is the ends of the power switch cables where they plug to the motherboard..and also if it has a front usb setup...sometimes the little connectors that come from the case to go to the motherboard are not super standard.

But my guess is that it will take a new motherboard no problem.

When I looked it up, the review I saw said a 5868 had an athlon in it...are you sure its a 566mhz cpu? That sounds more like an old celeron.

--------------------

I think yours is a slot a athlon...they have a pretty cool thing showing how to remove all the parts etc....looking at that Id say its NOT proprietary.

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/content/en.../c00000839.pdf

then looking at the back panel, id say its a regular atx supply etc http://h20015.www2.hp.com/content/en.../c00000839.pdf

look at your back panel and see if it looks like a normal sized backplate. Im sure it is but it looks short in the picture.

The only thing I might suggest is that the k7s5a is notoriously picky about ram and power supplies. I would suggest something a little less finicky. I am partial to biostar boards for just nice basic builds...they are very easy to work with.

I guess the catch is you need something with sdram slots though. They had a biostar board at newegg with dual slots but I dont see it now.

There are other options though besides that picky ecs board..maybe---> http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...alog=22&depa=0

Ok here is the deal...that psu u r getting is 20 bucks. U can get a new case (not top of the line) w/ a psu for about 35 for a decent one. I have the gray codegen case newegg.com sells for about 35 bucks and I believe the new version has 5 fans..the one I have has 3, I might be wrong though but that's only an extra 15 bucks u have to fork out.

you are spending 20.00 on a generic powersupply which you can buy a case with a generic powersupply for like $30 so it might not be a bas idea...yes you would have to move all the cards but you will have to do that with a new motherboard anyways

also the se versions of the videocards are really bad...for that price i would think of either a ti4200 if you can find one that cheap or a 9000 Pro

i agree with that and i dont mean to run up the price more (i know how it is $15 more here, $20 more there etc. lol) but u can get a barton 2500+ for $83 shipped from newegg and it doubles the cache and has a higher bus speed if your motherboard supports it. just my two cents. another thing you might wanna check is the traders forum btw
