i had the exact same thing happen to me and yes, you do need a floppy for this to work. go to a local computer store and buy the cheapest one and an empty floppy. next step, go to a via website and d/l this driver:
VIA VT8237 <------ that'll boot your sata hdd if it's the only hd. basically, after you d/l the driver, copy over the sata drivers; remember, keep the root directories as root directories. this is completely fool proof

the drivers on the k8v are pieces of crap. i was totally let down by asus and their non sata compatible drivers. anyhows, if you got any more questions or need more help, i'm on aim as:
