Locking Up Problems

over the past day i've been having problems with my computer doing a complete lock up.

it first happened when I tried to burn a dvd. it just locked up at 2-3% of the way. then I checked both my discs, and my ide driver settings... everything was normal.

so i decided to just let it chill for a bit. then I went on my 2nd hdd and started extracting some old game patches for to apply to play, and after about the 3rd game patch.. the comp started acting weird again.. it didnt completely lock up at first.. it would stutter. then after about a minute of stuttering, it locked up.

after this, i decided to upgrade my nForce 2 drivers (i have been running the old 2.10 for the longest time). so i upgrade to 3.13 and reboot. everything seems fine.

a couple hours later after doing some extensive stress tests I decide to reburn that dvd. and of course the computer completely locks up, but this time it was about 70% of the way done.

so.. that's about all i can describe. i've defragmented both drives, i've done memcheck and chkdsk and everything seems normal.

I hate to say it....maybe u need a fresh install of xp with all the updates etc.

perhaps the game patches etc have messed up the current install.

I tell u a good idea for gamers etc....but norton ghost....do a fresh install with all the newest drivers and updates..then ghost it right there and keep that ghost image for your "base install"....then if it gets messed up again...which they seem to do with games and dozons of patches etc..if it happens again you have the quick restore to the base install.

saves lots of time.

or possibly it could be heat related...but you said u did some stress testing.....
