need help getting out of the woods
Hello All,
I found this forum while trying to fix my PC today, and it helped in that I was finally able to get back to windows, but their are still problems. There seemed to be related threads, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention my details.
I run windows 2000 on a PC my friend built...it's got a gigabyte motherboard, and an amd athalon processor.
Anyhow...I was messing with my DSL settings (restored old ones...don't ask me why), and after it asked me to restart it kept crashing...right when the winodws screen popped up...with the progress bar, it would go to a blue screen and say it was a stop error.
After trying a bunch of stuff, I just decide to reinstall...I think that is when I began to get the missing Ntldr notice.
Then I changed the order in which the bios loaded drives, and I was finally able to get to windows. But if I take out the wondows CD the missing notice will come back up.
and before winodws does come up with the CD in there, it will tell me that "Bios is not installed because there are no drives attached "
So I think that is all the pertanent information. If anbody could just help me get my baby back to normal that would be great.
Thanks for your time.

Welcome to TechIMO!!
Is your drive actually detected in the BIOS?
Can you boot from the CD and get to the Recovery Console and attempt a repair?

I think it is detected...I can get into windows, and see my drive and it's partitions, so that means it's detected, right?. And i think Iv'e been in the recovery console, and done that, do you mean "FIXBOOT"? cause Iv'e done that...doesn't seem to help the problem.

Hey everybody,
Don't not mention something cause you think it's too basic....I really don't know much about computers. Does anybodythink it's a good idea to go to the gigabyte website, and download the latest drivers? Would that make any difference?
Thanks

What brought on this problem?
You say that you reinstalled windows but did you just repair the old one or did you completley format the drive before reinstalling?
If you did not format that would probobally be the best thing to do if you don't mind backing up or loosing your data...also i would probobally delete all partitions anr repartition it just to be sure?

I completely reformatted partition C, and reinstalled windows. I don't know how to delete all partitions, and repartition.
If I choose to do the whoe formatting thing over again..I should format from the bios, right?
I do not know exactly what caused this to happen.

Hi,
Many times when you disconnect the drives I have found that you simply need to go into cmos, even if it is listed under your drive, do an auto search, let it find it once again, then save and exit the cmos.

Did the hard drive have more than one partition? Or was it just one big c: drive?
So you are saying you CAN get into windows?? But when you get into windows there is no cdrom drive showing??

sorry I was unclear
There are three partitions...a C drive I keep for Windows...D drive for just about everything else, and a small E drive.
Yes, I can get into windows, but only with the windows CD in the drive...when I try to start up without it, I get an error message about "missing ntdlr
press any key"
which just loops itself.
And even with the CD, it does some wiered things....like right at the beggening it take a bit of time to do "detecting". and then it will also say that thing about Bios not being instaelled.
Thanks
