there's something about NTFS and FAT32 that doesnt allow you to access each computer. i think i can find a link to help you.... hold up

edit.. ohh did you share your drives?

edit again!! i make such un-thought out posts! you should be able to see your 98 with xp, but not xp with 98

NTFS and FAT32 dont matter over networks, only local drives (ie: 98 and below can only see FATxx)

In XP you can right click on a folder and goto properties, and there should be something like enable file sharing, then just enable file sharing. Make sure both computers are on the same workgroup, 98 is probably on WORKGROUP, XP might be on MSHOME, right click on my computer, properties, computer name, change (on xp)

then 98 should be able to goto network neigborhood and see the xp's shares. To enable file sharing on 98 you have to right click on network neighborhood, properties, and there should be a button called "file and print sharing" click that and enable em. To share a folder should be about the same as xp.

thats all off the top of my head so you might have to poke around a bit.

I've got a 4 port router and 2 98se machines, one XP home, and one XP Pro

make sure the work group is the same, you can name it anything you like.

If you're using zone alarm, you have to set the IP of each machine in the trusted zone on each machine

I had hell trying to set up networking until I realized it was the fire wall, and also turn off MS firewall

how will i check the ip of each machine?

edit:zone alarm is the culprit. i found ip added it on trusted site, but after loong unseccessful tries i figured out that trusted zone security is set to high, so that means still no network that pass even tough i have added ip on trusted sites. went in change the setting to medium..viola i can see the folder
