DVD won't read

I installed an NEC ND-1200 in my machine and it won't read DVDs.
It does fine with music or data media, but fails to recognise the presence of a DVD in the tray.
Furthermore, it won't allow me to set the DVD region in the hardware properties. It keeps giving the error message, "Unable to update region setting..."

the reason you can't change the region settings is exactly why they have regions...is the disk you ae reading and the region it is set on and the disk the same

Acually your allowed to change it upto 5 times in xp, i think. Maybe try deleting it from your device manager and restart and let windows find it again. worth a shot.

Edit: yup, all my dvd-roms say 5 changes remaining.

imatinkerer: You like have the worst luck with picking a drive that noone else seems to have. I have found hacked (region free) firmwares for the ND-1100 and the ND-1300 but nothing for your model. Try requesting a hacked firmware at http://forum.rpc1.org/viewforum.php?f=12

My guess. Could be that someon already did all the region changes, sent it back and now you have it. Some do that not realising that you only got 5 chances! Or the bios is bunk in the drive....who knows. I'd send it back though.

Its nothing to do with the OS> its the rom in the dvd drive that allows and counts the changes. No reason for only 5 changes other than they dont want you buying imports. Thats why hacked rom files exist.

I got the ND2500A NEC dvd-RW +rw and its tops. I love it. Burns wonderfully and fast. 8x dvd burn speed. DVD read speed is locked at 5x but who cares! And $98 shipped at newegg. Wieghing in under $100 and alot of reviews putting it against the $179 plextor is reason enuff to buy it!

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...152-012&depa=0

NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model ND-2500A, OEM Bulk

Specifications:
Write Speed: 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 32X CD-R, 16X CD-RW
Read Speed: 40X CD-ROM, 12X DVD-ROM

There she is. I got two at that price. One for me and one for my bro. Have a feeling they wont last long! (at newegg atleast)

Hehe. Glad ya like it. I was waiting for "good" $100 burners with low jitter rate to exist till I got into dvd's. I read alot of reviews first too. And I know one thing is def 100% certain. I love mine!
Great burner and low price all in one.
