Kids 8gb of space lost on my maxtor!! WTF???

ok something weird happened to my maxtor 40 gb. i had a problem wit it not being detected properly by the bios but eventually got that fixed. see the following thread for full details on that:

http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...ht=nurdonsite2

ok after i got it to boot into windows, it worked fine for about a day and then something happened to my D partation. i couldn't access the D: partation. so i thought the partation was messed. i treid to reformat it from win xp and dos but it would gimme an error along the lines of "windows could not format the drive" or something (can't remember exactly). then i decided....alright, im gonna get rid of both partations and recreate both of them and start all over again (since i had all of my stuff backed up). so i put in the win xp cd, delete both the partation (the c drive was recognized as an ntfs but hte d: was recognized and unknown). i then go to dos to create the partations al what do i discover????? it tells me that the maximum avaliable space on my hd is 32 gb!!!!!!!! what the F@&*!!! its a 40 gb hd, how could dos be saying that the maximum space is 32 gb!!! i thought dos was screwed so i put in the win xp to create a partation and it says the same thing! so i calmed myself down and created two partation (about 16 gb each where as before they were 19 gb each). i reinstalled windows windows fine and have been running perfectly since. i haven't had time to come on the forum till now. HOW DID I LOSE 8 GB OF SPACE FROM MY HD?????

this drive has been a pain in the @$$. i have tried to run powermax to see what is wrong but i donno what is worng, the program doesn't work (after the maxtor logo comes up, and i press f8 to continue, it just brings me back to command prompt) ???

sorry if i was a little rude but im really angry right now! so please if any of u know why this happened please answer or if u have anything to say against MAXTOR and the POS drives they make then please go right ahead

i don't know why it would be 40gb before and now only 32 but i do know that there was a 32gb limit before

also i dont think it could be from the base 2 to base 10 conversion since my 100gb only looses 8gb

Rofl...i have the EXACT same problem as you. I dunno, after a month or so it seemed to have fixed itself...Has anyone found what might be causing it?

You're sure you don't have the 32-GB limit jumper enabled. Many drives have these.

where is this jumper located? is it at the bottom of the drive??

oh and i also changed my hdd's jumper configuration from cable select to master (which is the only way i could fix the problem i had before. see link above) would that have caused this???

tahnx for the replies

W2K and XP have a 32 gig size limit if you format in Fat32. It will also give you the error message you received. Both of these os's are built for the ntfs. You can use the convert command to change over or you can wipe the drive and reformat in ntfs.
