I'm going to be in a similiar situation as you in a couple months and I'm really looking at the Dell line up with particular attention to the Latitude line. They're the business grade computer and seem to hold up really well. I know it's going to cost me more up front but I'm hoping it'll cost me less in maintenance, downtime and frustration in the long run.

I've looked at the Toshiba's Best Buy has and none of the one's I've seen do better than 1024x768 on the built in display. For a laptop to be a mobile desktop replacement for me the display MUST do 1280x1024 natively.

Let us know what you decide on and what you think about it after you've had it a while.

EDIT: When I said 1280x1024 I should have said more than 1024x768. 1400 x 1050 is fine with me

Check out the Fujitsu's.

My college son has one and has had no problems with it.

Runs great. Very good display.

Toshiba's are pretty good, fairly durable too. They can handle most video and memory intensive applications/software out there. Make sure you go high end video and memory if you intend to do applications that need 128 mb video or 512 mb ram.

Battery life is pretty good, and it can take a beating.
I've dealt with service and support and they were pretty good. Never had an issue with my laptop and that was after travelling multiple times with it.
Had no problems surviving the checkouts at airline counters as well.

Light-weight, durable, easy mobility, and reasonably priced...

My work computer is a Latitude C600 (older model). I've had it 18 months. Extremely durable, mine gets banged around quite a bit and I've never had anything break. The battery runs about 3 hours if you're running applications (and I keep a fully-charged backup battery). Internal CD-ROM or floppy drive. It's not performance oriented, it's a business machine. A little heavy, which doesn't bother me.

This is the typical comment I hear about Dell Latitudes (and also why I'm so interested in getting one).
