Systems ntfs.sys error now just black screen and blinking cursor

I need help!! My husband currently has an Intel motherboard with a P4 1.8 system running Windows 2000 pro. While trying to boot up one day he received an error message stating: Windows/system32/drivers/ntfs.sys is corrupt or missing

I guess prior he had received a strange error message and tried rebooting upon which he got the above error.

We tried booting with the windows cd in the drive and it wouldn't auto run.

Now what happens is you see the intel logo screen and then it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I took the tower into work and had a co-worker look at it and he tried changing settings in the bios and scandisk and fdisk i think. I piggy backed the hard drive into my computer and did win doctor and norton scans with no problems. It seems to be that when it has to stand on it's own it can't do it. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!!! My husband wants to get in the car and go buy a new harddrive right now!! Please help.

I don't know about XP but with 2K I get a message that says press any key to boot from CD at the bottom of the screen at system startup.

It doesn't automatically go into setup.

We are using 2000 pro, the only options we get are F2 to enter setup or F12 to boot from network........
