On a raid 1 set up, I would have to set up the array first, correct?
I mean I can't just add a second hard drive, set up the array and it would copy the first disk to the second one, right? It would destroy the data on the first one, correct?

Thanks
Gerry

as far as I know..for instance on an abit kr7a raid motherboard...you can indeed just load the drive first with windows etc..and THEN build the array.

JP, just to clarify, are you saying it can be done? Let me be a little more specific.

The pc has a 60 gig SATA hd and a Abit IC7 mb. The hd has been partitioned, has Win2k Pro installed and has data from about a month accumulated on it. You are saying that it is possible to install the second drive, setup the array, and the data on the first
first drive will be copied to the second drive?

Do you know if I need to partition and format the second drive first or will that be done during the building of the array?

Thanks,
Gerry

Evidently with RAIDO you have to do the array first.

But with RAID1 you dont.

go here http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/...ries=1&model=5

on the right youll see "user manual"....download it..look on page e3.

first it tells you that if you build a raid 0 array that all data will be erased from the drives....

then it says, about RAID1....."if you want to create a RAID1 (mirroring) array, please make sure which hard disk is the source disk and which one is the destination disk. If you make a mistake you may copy the blank data to the source disk which will result in both hard disks becoming blank"

------

so basically when you do a RAID1 setup it copies the one hard drive to the other...so just make sure you have the proper drive chosen as the source...and the blank drive as the destination.

(just like using nortonghost, if you get it backwards it will just end up with 2 blanks drives, lol)

-----

I dont think there is any need to format or partition etc because as I say it is just like using ghost..where it doesnt matter if it is formatted or whatever first cuz it is overwritten anyway.

Thanks JP. You saved me a lot of unnecessary work. I was going to completely rebuild it.

The manual?! Why didn't I think of that?!
