39 or 40 pin

my teacher is always telling the class about the 40 pin ribbon cable but each time me and my friend correct him and tell him that it is only 39 pin...after counting he says its true but most people will say 40 pin...but then again he only teaches really old hardware which is rather annoying everything we do is with win 98 or earlier and we always talk about things like the 528mb limit on old hard drive, isa slots, scsi in home use,ect...so if i recall right older hard drives were 40 pin but what do you guys commonly call the cables 39 or 40 pin

While you may be right that it's 39 pin, I think it's pretty much convention to call it 40 pin.

Here's another case. In terms of electricity, the current actually flows from negative to positive since current is a flow of electrons that are negatively charged. But because of convention, it is said that it comes from the positive to the negative.

When you count the holes in the cable one or more holes may
be filled. This acts like a key so the cable is plugged in right.

I couldn't vote, you don't have 40-wire as a choice. I call them 40 or 80 wire IDE cables.
