Wireless Networking

I need to know what I need to buy to get a outdoor wireless network thats a lil less than half a mile or so. Maybe a quarter mile. I need it so I can network with my friend so we can play lan games.

google search and then look for hardware that actually runs on your hardware.

From experience - some stuff just does not work in the real world.

And for your money - 802.11B is fast enough! -

Remember that the further the distance the slower the speed.

true - but as you have guessed or can guess - when checking speeds - you only need to be fast as the slowest link in your network - If you are using 802.11b - you are at theoretical 11mps - actual is slower - yuo can get a speed estimate from most manufactures sites which give you signal strength verses speed connectivity -

One test recently performed was to link to a encrypted wireless site - and see what we could get for a theory - well 50% was the lowest strenght - and this was good for a 8mps speed - which around here is 20 times the fastest landline speed -

The lenght was 18 kilometers - about 11miles

cheers - C

for alittle bit more than 50 bucks he could get something better than a cantenna, plus i heard bad reviews about those who have purchased from the site.

You can get a 200mW wireless bridge if you wanna connect your LAN to his... Or a 200mW access point and you can both connect to it. The bridges can be rather expensive, a quick google search brought up one that was $300+ but had a range of 15 miles! A quick search on 200mW AP's and I saw some 802.11B AP's for about $90. I don't think you'd get 15 miles, but if 200mW PC cards can do 4000' i'm sure the AP's can do atleast that which is more than enough range for your needs.
