It can shorten the life of your CPU, motherboard and/or RAM. Also, if the CPU runs too hot it can get damaged or destroyed, so GOOD cooling is necessary for overclocking.

As far as shortening the life I am sure that you will end up replacing your rig before the OC'ing catches up to you.

Make sure you do it right and cool appropriatley.

That certainly was a good thread, Good sence with the OC'ing. Seeing that you could make the 2500 clock around 3200 speeds but cooling does tend to play a big part when clocking @ that speed. When clocking @ the 2.08 speed I get NO increase in core temp. That is with leaving the v-core voltage @ 1.65 V. So the increase to a 2800+ is a nice stable and dependable speed for the 2500+ Barton

One thing is that doing it incorrectly can screw up your BIOS! I was stepping up my FSB speed in big intervals and when I changed from 215 to 225, the computer would no longer boot. I reset the BIOS then tried again. It would boot the first time but if I reset the computer without even changing anything, it would not boot. I had to patch the BIOS to get the computer working again .

Overclock only if you know what you are doing. Also have good cooling system since your machine will get hot when overclocking and that can damage your hardware. It also depends on what you want to overclock and what programs you use to do it. I would say overclocking the CPU or Video card is probably the most common. If you dont need more power from your computer, then there is no point in overclocking in my opinion.

Depends largely on what cpu you intend to overclock. Currently the XP2500+ is a great overclocker. Most of them run at 3200+ speeds with standard cooling. But you need a good board too.

Some people OC only when their rig is getting kinda outdated ( slow), and they want to eek another 6-12 months before upgrading. Less risk, as your rig needs replacing anyhow...

Do it right from the beginning so you don't need to spend as much money. Look at how much money you save when you overclock. Rob Rich said he got his 2.4C up to 3.4. A 2.4C costs $168 at newegg, a 3.4C costs $423 at newegg. That's big savings. I got a 2500+ higher than a 3200+. 2500+ costs $80 at newegg, 3200+ costs $215.
