Hello guys! I haven't been using Linux in a while I was tinkering with the Windows 2003 Server Eval on another machine and left mine alone for a while. I was also having fun at Gabe house (gjimene2) just surfing and stuff. I am fully back and decided to get my ATI 9700 PRO card working in Linux. I succeeded!
Finding what version of X I had was a pain. I forgot how I found it but I think I found it using
Installing was trickier because the module always tainted the kernel. I had to modify the ULS release number in the module header to fix it. Then the module kept unloading. I assume because I forgot to delete the MESA LIBGL's (not the GLU NEVER REMOVE GLUs. I found that out the hard way and 4 reinstalls LOL)
I got the LibGL's from MESA removed because evertime the module unloaded it just falled back to MESA Indirect which is software rendering. I got that fixed. Then I was looking around on the net and found a HOWTO in German that I had to translate.
It said becuase the 2.4's kernels dont fully support agp8x, you need to do this edit /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/agpgart_be.c and go to line 6028 and change via_generic_setup to via_kt400_setup (because that was my chipset and mobo listed in the #'s. Sped things up a lot!
Now I had to install all my games. And they work great. Along with DVD's I am set to go! All I need to do is figure out how to fully utilize OpenOffice. I love it because I wanna learn how to use everything.
Thanks for looking guys. I am looking forward posting an ATI HowTo on my website for everyone to get going (in plain english.. no gibberrish)
Stay safe everyone!
