Media OPTERON GAMING

I am thinking of building a new computer and have thought about the AMD Opteron as my choice of CPu. I was just wondering if you are able to play the latest and soon to be released high end graphics games on the Opteron, if it will perform better than the Athlon FX-51. Games like Halflife 2, Doom3, Stalker and Far Cry.

I know it is a Workstation CPU for Developing Graphics, Renderings, etc but does anyone know how it will perform as a games machine?

It would be over kill from the athlon 64 and FX series.
It is also aimed at high end server applications as well, spending more on a cpu just for gaming would be a lot of money down the drain.
However it's your money and my opinion.
It's not going to yield much more performance towards gaming and especially since the processor is even geared more and a dual or quad system.
So if you must go with a 64bit system, just stick with an athlon 64 or FX, and go for a 939 pin system also if you do go for anything. The old set of processors were good, but you will be kicking yourself when it is time to upgrade.

I wont be using it just for games but also for graphics as i am doing 3D modelling and engineering drawings at UNI. I need it more for work and projects, i just want to know if it will give good performance on games as i dont want to use 2 different machines for different things.

I wouldn't go with Opteron... AFIK they're actually clocked lower than the fastest FX and the fastest FX is only bearly faster than A64. So unless you plan on going dual processors, i'd go A64... If you do plan on going dual CPU's i'd go FX but not Opteron. If you do choose FX, wait for the 939 pin version as the 940's will be phased out.

But can the Opteron perform high performance gaming? in order to run future games such as Stalker and Halflife2? if i wanted to play games aside from graphic work?

Well if you really needed a high end work station for school, then go for it. As for gaming, it would play all the latest games with out a problem, it isn't the processor you want for the best performance tho for gaming, the latest 64 or FX would perform faster.
However ramongtp is right, the athlon 64 is probably what you want to go with, they are very powerful as is. I believe they were actually ranking higher than the latest Xeon processor. So they are more than enough to power any application your using.
It would be great for a workstation, however the opteron I believe would be slower for gaming as ramon mentioned, it is clocked slower.
However you may go with a 940, try not to if you can, but when upgrading, the 939 processors work in the 940 pin sockets, so they will still be interoperable.

None of the 64bit AMD processors will have a problem with any game. At that point, you'd want to be more concerned with the video card than anything else.

Athlon 64 with 1 gig mem and 9800pro. Best bang for buck gaming station and future proof gaming for good 2 years. GOt the A64 3000+ with a good asus Kv8 deluxe mobo for my bro. (has WiFi too) Came to $260 I think.

No, if you go with an opteron system by the MSI K8T Master2-FAR, it has the best features a well as dual cpu slots, it can use either 1 or 2 opterons or it can use 1 amd fx cpu. If you set up an opteron system on this you with always have the option of sticking another opteron in it and it being top of the line for another few years.
