Low virtual memory quick fix???

Hey all. I have a small problem that I need a quick fix for. I have a lady here that gets a "System is too low on virtual memory" type message everytime she tries to print multiple copies of a document in pretty much any program. She's running Win95 with 64M RAM. I was just hoping to get a few ideas for a quick fix. Oh yeah, almost forgot... She has like 5 Gig space on C: so that kinda rules out the space thing. Thanks

Send a message via Yahoo to Brainchild
cloes down some of the programs that are runnning in the systray, that should release some memory, also ctrl>alt>delete, and close some of the programs running in the background will give back some too.

Hey Mike!

Which printer is she printing to? Try removing the printer driver and installing a newer copy.

Who is it?

Are the virtual memory settings automatic or user specified? And if so, what are they?

Is it a USF pc? If it is, I would drop another stick of memory in it, format it, load Win 2000 and be done. You will eventually have to do it anyway. When is the big rollout gonna take place?

Check to see if the virtual memory settings have been set to a maximum or not. If so just increase it a bit. Defragging the hd might help a bit

Are you sure the error message refers to virtual memory, or is it just saying "insufficient memory"? In the printer properties, is it set to spool or print direct to the printer? Spooling will temporarily "tie up" a large amount of RAM, but not the system itself. Printing direct ties up the system (CPU) until the print queue is empty, but does not use as much memory.

There are a few really inaccurate replies and unwarranted assumptions so far in this thread.

• A re-installed or newer version of the printer driver has no bearing on and will not solve a low-memory problem.

• "Another stick of memory" and "Win 2000" are certainly not the first, nor even a good, sensible or economical remedy that anyone should be recommending to solve this problem.

• Without a lot more info, there is absolutely no reason to assume that a system currently running Windows 95 is even able to be upgraded this way. Windows 2000 is expensive, and may not run well or even install. If the system requires EDO RAM or SIMM modules, they can be very expensive.

Jman! I reloaded the printer. That was all it was. They're taking away all of the "personal" printers pretty soon and making everyone use the network printers. It was Mary U.'s. It was some old school HP printer that should have already been melted down. Thanks everyone!!

Thanks!

It also helps that oOWaXOo currently holds the admin job that I held for 2 1/2 years. All the servers, workstations, printers, etc... were kind of like my children.

Anyone else ever felt that way?
