Kids MVP3-596-W877- Can I upgrade CPU?

Hello, I am sooo glad to find this place.
I inherited a computer from my brother last year. The systems info thing on my computer says the cpu is an AMD-K6 (ton). It is supposed to be the equivalent of 400 mhz. I need to upgrade because some programs I want to use recommend faster processor. If I don't have to, I don't want to spring for a new system right now. Can I upgrade this cpu to an 800 or 1gig? The motherboard info says: MVP3-596-W877. I have no idea what that means or where to find info. Thanks for any help.

VIA MVP3 is a 100 MHz bus "super socket-7" chipset. Yet still, there have been no faster socket-7 processors available than 550 MHz. Today, all you can buy is a 500 MHz, e.g. at newegg for $15 or so. From the 400 you already have, that's too small an improvement to be worth the bother.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll look for a motherboard, cpu combo so I wont have to replace everything.
Thanks again, Patsy
