Starting an test dial up ISP

I would like to create a dial up using my ADSL. I just would like to see if I can do it. I am not planing on doing it. I would just like to make one to really see how it works. What do I need to do?

Better ask you ISP before atempting this as I could get you in trouble just to LYK. I would think you would have to set up a host server with modems on dedicated lines set to answer inbound calls and some type of authentication for connection.

If you have Win2K/XP, check the "Make New Connection" applet in Windows Networking under the Control Pannel. Select "accept incoming connections" and follow the on-screen steps.

While this is a very simplistic way to offer such a service, it would offer you a chance to experience to basic premise behind providing a dial-up network.

As to your ISP learning about such a service, the chance is limited. Your system will act as a router, thus all the connections appear to be coming from your system.

I know several people that use this technique for establishing Internet connections while roaming in the field servicing other people's computers.

When I tried setting up a dial-up to my home network with internet I had a auto-connect external Zoom v92 modem and on the other computer had a hardware modem and I was never able to connect faster then 33k. I tried several things and nothing seemed to work. I was told in order to have a faster connection I needed some type of improved phone line and a special modem on the server end. BTW both were win98 system's at the time.

What I did was enable Internet Connection Sharing on the cable connection then enable microsoft networking, file sharing, and TCP/IP for the modem connection. Set the server system's IP to 1.68.0.1 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and on the client set the IP on the dial-up connection to 192.168.0.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0 . I then could type in the browser \\192.168.0.1 and transfer files really slow and pages loaded so slow I gave up.

Consumer-grade v.90/92 modems are only specified for incoming connect rates up to 33.6kbps. You would need an ISP-specifc modem and a certified phone line(s) for a 56k connect.

That's pretty much what I found out the hard way So even with a ISP grade modem a person would most likely have the same issue without upgrade to phone service?

edit did some hunting and it looks like it would require requires 8 BRI (ISDN) line and a good modem or pool modem if more then one connection is needed at a time.

The incoming lines must be digitally routed from from the phone company central office for an ISP to support 56k dialup connections. A standard analog line will not work.
