microsoft office "save as" problem

HI,

I'm having problems with programmes freezing when I try to "save as" documents in microsoft office 2000 applications such as word or excel. I am running Windows XP. When I click on the pulldown menu to choose the destination folder everything freezes for about 5 minutes, then the programme allows me to continue. I have turned off Nortons anti-virus software incase thta was running a scan but it didn't help. Nothing new has been loaded onto the computer to cause a conflict and everything was working fine previously. Any suggestions?

Do you have installed all Microsofts's released patches for Office 2000? Maybe thats the problem, I have seen these stuff happen before when not having the program totally updated, specially when using old software in new OS's like XP.

yes, I thought that was a possibility as I hadn't downloaded all the latest patches so that was the first thing I tried, to no avail.

Do you have mapped drives that are not active? If so try removing them. I believe that was my fix for this problem.

Sorry, I've made a mistake. I have windows XP and Office XP. I have downloaded all the patches to no avail and I don't have any mapped drives that are not active. I'm stumped!
