ECS L4vxa2 (2 probs)

I have a client that supplied all the parts for me to make him a system:

Cheap case with pretty lights and 300w PSU (this I know is the problem) I alway tell my clients to buy 500w PSU's but they never listen.
ECS L4VXA2 with intel 2.8
ATI 9200
512 Kingston Ram
Maxtor 60gig hd
Win XP Pro

everything else is onboard

Problems:

USB not functioning at all, won't recognise anything

When machine is shutdown, it asks to be turned off (it is safe to turn off your computer)

Any ideas what could be causing these problems?

Paul

well that system should do ok on a 300w psu unless it has a few hard drives/optical drives...but try unplugging the lights mabey they are taking up alot of juice

check the usb to see if it needs to be enabled in the bios...also make sure to install the drivers for the usb...sometimes there is also a jumper on the motherboard to enable the usb headers for the front ports

the psu could just do that because it is generic or something but mabey there is also an option for that auto power off in the bios

If it's a real quality 300W supply, you might be OK. With cheapskate customers, I doubt this is the case.

Peter, you are so correct. The brand of case is Super and it came from Fry's.
All BIOS settings are good but no USB and also that weird shut down issue.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstall all USB goodies but still nada, and of course the ECS website is of no help.

Check whether there is power to the USB ports. They should have +5V on the Vcc pins. If they don't, then either a fuse is blown or the respective traces are zapped. Check the board for burn marks or other signs of abuse.

In that case you should check whether e.g. a USB keyboard operates whilst still in BIOS (or in DOS). If so, then your Windows USB driver installation is screwed up. Check the MS knowledge base for patches - particularly the UHCI driver needed for Intel and VIA chipsets has had quite a few updates and patches that are not available from Windows Update!
