Trip is on a distinguished road

Hello all! I have an AMD Athlon 1700+ processor but everytime I boot my desktop it identifies it only as a 1100.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Go into the BIOS setup utility. Usually it's the Delete key right after powering on. Look for "Press key to enter setup" where "key" is the one you want to hit. Once inside find the settings for the CPU FSB(Front Side Bus). Change the setting from 100 to 133. Save the changes and exit. That should give you the correct speed

Edit: Welcome to Techimo too

Alternatively, there may be a jumper on the mboard for this. I know this is true for quite a few Biostar motherboards. Regardless, the prob will be resolved by changing the CPU's FSB speed to 133MHz. Later....Jet

Hello all and thanks for the replies!!!!

I tried setting my FSB to 133 both through BIOS and/or by adjusting the jumper settings on my MB. However, I encountered several problems after doing so -- although I noticed that my processor was correctly identifed after this as 1700+ -- (1) Windows wouldn't load (2) since it wouldn't load I tried to install a fresh copy but it deletd everything on my HD - including the partitions - which I find very strange (3) CPU temp went up to 60oC and (4) my comp would take AGES to load the inital screen (the one where it tells you to hit del if you want to enter BIOS)when my primary HD is installed.

I have tried setting my FSB back to 100 but I still get the same results.

Any suggestions on why this is happening?

The specs are as follows:

Amd Athlon XP 1700

Jetway V266B Motherboard

256 + 64 mb Ram (According to the label on the actual RAM they're both pc 133s but is there any other way for me to clarify this)

NVidia 64 mb Graphics Card

Soundblaster 5.1 (not sure about this) sound card

try taking the 64 mb stick out and just using the 256.

The cpu temp may be due to a poor connection between the processor core and the heat sink. Did you use a small amount of thermal compound, and make sure the heat sink is on flat, making good contact?

There is a lip on the heat sink that fits over the shelf on the processor socket. If it is on backwards, it is not making contact, thus not transferring heat properly.
