Installing devices using Belkin Hub with XP

After removing my old OS - Windows ME, as it was a corrupt system, and replacing it with XP, I am having major problems installing my devices - i.e. my scanner (visioneer), and my printer (hp deskjet 940c), I think because of the hub I have installed.

I thought it may be because the devices need to be inserted straight into the PC first (I have a Packard Bell Le Diva with 2 USB ports), but as I am not sure really what am doing with 'device manager', i sillily did not uninstall the previous ones it had found, worrying I would muck something up, and now i have multiple devices mostly under 'Human Interface Devices', and some under some others - it seems to be all the ones I attempted connecting using the hub.

In my device manager, under the expandable heading 'Human Interface Devices', I have six sub heading categories, as follows:

- HID-Compliant consumer control device
- HID-Compliant consumer control device
- HID-Compliant device
- USB Human Interface device
- USB Human Interface device
- USB Human Interface device

Under 'PCMCIA adapters', I have these expanded results:

- Texas Instruments PCI-1420 CardBus Controller
- Texas Instruments PCI-1420 CardBus Controller

and under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' these are the sub headings:

-Generic USB Hub
-Intel(r) 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller
-NEC USB Hub
-USB Cable Modem (WDM)
-USB Composite Device
-USB Printing Support
-USB Root Hub

Aren't all these too many? Maybe not. I am unsure, and not sure what I should do next, and can't seem to get any relevant help searching the net. or from operators as I can't get a phone to the PC!

All I want to be able to do is have my devices set up as they were before i.e. my mouse receiver and my Hub USB plugged straight into the PC, and my internet USB, Printer USB, and Scanner plugged into my Hub.

Does this require putting them straight into the PC first, and then rearranging them into the Hub? If so, is there anyone out there that can give me some sort of step-by-step guide to doing this, as I keep getting it wrong, and the PC keeps recognising them over and over again, and I am unsure about using the device manager.

Funnily enough, the only thing that seems to work at the moment in the Hub is the internet USB, which I have plugged in now, with my mouse and Hub into the PC..

If anyone can help me with this - i.e. some help with the 'device manager', and how I can safely remove the devices multipled, and more importantly, then install my printer and scanner, and how to do this with the hub..and if I have my hub correctly installed(!)

As you can see, I am at a loss, and in need of some quality help where this is concerned, which is why I came here.

Thanks for readin' - Sorry it was a bit long winded!

There is no such thing as ME professional. I would say that when windows gos to install the device you should insert the cd with the drivers for that device and tell the windows wizard to search the cd for the driver. If it's trying to install when you attach the devices i'm not sure what to do. Also how old is this computer? I see you said it's a packard bell, which i think has not been around for awhile.

You will need to make sure you have updated drivers for your devices. ( Download from mfg.) In some of the older hardware you will need to install the software first then plug your device into the hub. XP may also recognize some of what you have and install for you, but you will still need to load HP and Visioneers application software. I would recommend first uninstalling the devices(except your internet) and reinstall them one at a time.

BTW, congrats for getting xp on a packard bell.

Thank you for both of your postings.

My Parckard Bell is just under 2 years old, and is a fairly good version of a Desktop Packard Bell I feel. The only thing which let me down was the previous operating system.

I will try what you have suggested, but I am in need of help with the acutual device manager, as my 'help and support' function does not help me with what I am trying to find out.

The problem lies in the fact that if you look at the list again - I don't know what refers to what in the 'Human Interface Devices', so I don't know what to uninstall -

In the 'Device Manager'..

'Human Interface Devices"

- HID-Compliant consumer control device
- HID-Compliant consumer control device
- HID-Compliant device
- USB Human Interface device
- USB Human Interface device
- USB Human Interface device
..

and under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" (USB Controllers)

Generic USB Hub
-Intel(r) 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller
-NEC USB Hub
-USB Cable Modem (WDM)
-USB Composite Device
-USB Printing Support
-USB Root Hub

Which ones refer to what? What is a - 'HID-Compliant consumer control device' exactly? Is this my hub?

Or is this my hub - 'USB Human Interface device'?...and if so, what is the other entry?

As I said, I aslo need help with definitions for the expanded entried in device manager under 'USB Controllers'.

Please help if you can

Thank you for reading

Well just a suggestion - go back and check to make sure that all your hardware works with XP - I loaded XP onto a machine and printed a report before I allowed it to upgrade it - and many devices that worked find in 98 went west in XP.

Now I also know of someone trying to use chinese ME - and found that not much worked under it - and his machine was so new that drivers were not up on the site for his machine.

So for what it is worth - check you hardware - and act accordingly

Thanks centurion. I wil check this. But, I think they do work ok with XP, because the 'plug and play' feature detected the scanner, printer, and hub when I put them straight into the PC - although I will check for newer drivers, but I don't think they are that old - thouh it's possible.

The problem lies in the fact that if you look at the list again - I don't know what refers to what in the 'Human Interface Devices', so I don't know what to uninstall -

As I said, I aslo need help with definitions for the expanded entried in device manager under 'USB Controllers'....and then need to know the correct way to plug them in - i.e. do I plug them straight into the PC first, and then into the hub to get them to install properly? Or should this ot be an issue if teh Hub is installed properly?

As you can see, I am at a total loss

Please help if you can

Thank you for reading
