Compaq starts, then shuts down
OK, I need some help here.
I have got a friend of my daughter's computer. It won't boot. It was given to them, and they asked that I clean it up a bit. I went through and cleaned everything, hooked up the DVD that was in it (the cables inside were just dangling (the jumpers were set wrong, I discovered) fired it up, to make sure all was working (no hardware issues), then gave it back. I got a call later saying that it would not start. I picked it up, and sure enough, when I plug it in, the fans come on for about 2 seconds, the it shuts off. The power switch has no function. If I unplug it and wait for a few minutes, the plug it back in, the same thing happens.
Specs: Compaq 7000 series. 800 MHz Athlon. 128 MB memory.
I tried switching the CPU fan, resetting the CMOS, checked the memory (it's good, and no beeping sounds), tried disconnecting all drives (except HD and Floppy). Tried reseating the processor, and all the cards (video, moden, lan). Still no luck.
Any Ideas ?

Thanks Bill,
I thought that as well, but it seams to power up fine each time, it just shuts off before I can do anything. I think it has something to do with the cpu, but I just don't know. I was hoping that someone had come across this before.

I have just a month ago, but I don't remember the fix for sure.
I think either the PS or processor was bad I ???

what's the OS? can you get into the BIOS?
There's a way to reinstall XP without reformating, just reinstall the windows system files. You might try doing that, if they still have the recovery discs.

Does not make it into the bios. Just tried a new PSU. After resetting the CMOS a second time, it does not power at all. Last time I reset the cmos, I had to leave it unplugged for a while , then it did the same thing when I plugged it back in (powered up, the 2 seconds later, powered off).
Edit: Tried that first thing Bullgator... No luck

What about the CMOS battery? Maybe its bad...though I don't think it would cause the computer to shutdown.
HTH.

Well, I went home at lunch, and the darn thing doesn't do a thing now. No fans, no beeps, not a sound when I plug it in. This really sucks, it was working when I gave it back the first time. I tested it, shut it down, wrapped up the power cord and gave it to them. Now I feel responsible.
Oh well, I've got an old K6-III I'll donate. (sniff-sniff) |
