MDT hard disk problem

Hello. A friend of mine gave me an MDT hard disk. He had windows 98 and suddenly, it didn't started. I have tried to find a utility program for this type of drive ti check and find what's wrong with it. Then I found another program (Spinrite 5.0) and after half an hour of scanning, it told me that it detected a surface defect within a sector belonging to the DOS file system, and that it cannot recover the data an cannot mark that sector as being bad. And now here comes the question: What can I do? I have formated the drive (low level) and everything looked OK. I've partitioned the drive with fdisk, then when I tried to format it, this error message apeared: "Track 0 bad"
What is there to do (other than trowing it to the trash) ?

Hard drive utillites like Ontrack's Disk Manager can add bad tracks to the bad track map.
Normally if track 0 is bad the had drive is no longer usable
