Maxtor not detected?

I got a 15 gb Maxtor from a friend and I think it was supposed to be working. So I hooked it up, booted it, as it posted I got a SMART warning that it failed and to back up and replace. I had problems with another Maxtor recently and used their PowerMax diagnostic to fix it so I thought I would try it again. Powermax couldn't detect it.It is detected in the bios.Power max said no devices detected. I had booted up a Win 98 start up floppy, ran a thorough scandisk on it though. What's the deal? A 98 start up will detect it , run a scan on it but Powermax can't detect it? What am I missing? I don't want to trash it if I don't have to. Give me some ideas.

I just had a Maxtor fail. In the beginning it did the same thing.
First windows saw it, then didn't but the bios still saw it, then didn't sometimes smart drive said it was fine, but then said bad...
Then it just quit working.. How old is it?
Did you run chk dsk?

Did by any chance the person you got it from wipe it?

did you set it up on cable select, or as master/slave?

The jumpers are set correctly I assume?

I have it set as a slave and bios detects it that way. As far as age , whenever a 15 gb was the norm I guess. Definitely out of warranty I would think. I started to run chkdisk but you know how it says "Use scandisk , it can fyx problems blah blah blah". I wiped it, fdisked and formatted it to fat32 . It seemed fine THEN.
